Lifeguard Training

Image 1

H&L Pools believe that customer service and safety are paramount! Our lifeguards and aquatic staff are trained annually by the Starfish Aquatic Institute’s (SAI) StarGuard® lifeguard program which consists of an 8 hour online training session that must be completed before the class, and 26 hours of intense training and practice drills.

On-going Training

After completing the StarGuard® course, lifeguards and aquatic staff members are required to maintain a minimum of 4 hours of ongoing training a month. In-service training takes place at each facility and is conducted by a licensed StarGuard® instructor. During these training sessions, lifeguards will review policies and procedures, rescue skills, and meet with local EMT and Fire Department personnel. Additionally, they will address and correct any operational issues encountered during the season.

Safety Audits

One of our key components to maintaining a professional and reliable staff is performing our unannounced safety audits. Several times a month, a member from our executive management team and SAI, referred to as a “Reviewer” will visit random client facilities unannounced to the staff and observe the lifeguards on duty. The reviewer will be checking to make sure the lifeguards are actively scanning their area of responsibility as well as maintaining a "rescue ready" posture at all times. During these audits, a life like manikin may be placed into the water and a lifeguard will have a maximum of 30 seconds to identify and respond to the manikin. The Reviewers have the authority to suspend or revoke a lifeguard license in the event a lifeguard fails to meet training standards.
